Solar, Explained Properly.
Straight answers on how solar works, what it saves, and how to avoid the common mistakes.
HOW IT WORKS
What Solar Actually Does.
Solar turns sunlight into usable electricity for your home. The goal is simple: reduce what you buy from the utility, with a system that stays safe, serviceable, and clean-looking for decades.
1
Panels make DC power
Panels produce direct current (DC) whenever there’s usable sunlight.
2
Inverter makes AC power
Your inverter converts DC into AC power your home uses every day.
3
Your panel uses it first
Your loads consume solar first. Extra goes to the grid (or to a battery if you have one).
What happens to “extra” solar?
If you’re producing more than you’re using, the surplus is typically exported to the grid under your utility’s rules. When production drops, on cloudy days or at night, your home automatically pulls what it needs from the grid, unless you have a battery set up to cover selected loads.
- Grid-tied: Great ROI, simplest design, depends on utility during outages.
- Solar + Battery: Backup for chosen circuits, more independence, more design complexity.
- Load planning matters: Backup power depends on what you choose to back up and how you use it.
WHAT TO ASK BEFORE YOU BUY
What Most Solar Websites Don't Tell You.
“Just pick a Tier-1 panel and you're set.”
“Any crew can bolt panels to a roof.”
“Bigger system, bigger savings.”
“Size it for today's bill.”
System design matters more than the panel brand
Shading, roof geometry, main panel limitations, and conductor runs will make or break performance and inspection outcomes. A “cheap” design often becomes expensive when rework starts.
Electrical + aesthetics should both be done right
We treat solar as permanent electrical infrastructure. That means code compliance and safety are non-negotiable, and clean routing, straight runs, and a professional finish are part of the standard.
Utility rules affect savings
Your utility rate plan, export rules, and time-of-use windows matter. The “best” system isn’t always the biggest. It’s the one sized and configured for your actual usage and rate structure.
Future-proofing saves money later
Thinking ahead for EVs, HVAC upgrades, pools, or an ADU can prevent a redesign. A good installer asks those questions before permits are pulled.
INSTALLATION STANDARDS
What “Done Right” Looks Like.
The difference between a clean install and a problem install usually shows up in the details.
Planned conduit routing
Not “shortest path at all costs.”
Roof penetrations minimized
And flashed correctly.
Correct grounding, bonding, and labeling
To current code.
Equipment mounted square and serviceable
So future work is safe and clean.
Install finished like a professional trade
Because it is.
FAQ
Common Questions.

Will I make enough solar during the day to use at night?
Solar only produces when there’s usable sunlight. At night you’ll pull from the grid unless you add battery storage configured for backup (and sized for what you want to run).
Do I need a battery?
Not always. If your goal is pure bill reduction, grid-tied solar can be a strong value. If you want backup power, resilience, or more control under time-of-use rates, a battery can make sense, as long as it’s designed around your loads and priorities.
How do I know my system is working?
You should have monitoring (app/web) showing production, usage, and alerts. We prefer setups that are easy to understand and easy to service years later.
What’s the biggest mistake homeowners make?
Buying on price alone. Rework, inspection failures, and ugly conduit routing are the “hidden cost” of rushed installs. A clean design and clean workmanship is what protects the investment.
